Exploring the "deep" history of current issues - Ukraine, Northern Ireland, India/Pakistan and Palestine - and the use and abuse of history in promoting and justifying conflict. Our examination will be restricted to the past; for example Palestine in the late-Ottoman period and under the British mandate, leading to the foundation of the state of Israel in 1948 and will also look at imperial attitudes and their impact on decision making.
Participants need only an interest in history, a readiness to read extracts and articles and a willingness to participate in discussion.

Student Materials:I hope to be able to conduct the course using circulated extracts and journal articles so that participants don't have to purchase any materials.
