In this course we will examine the history and development of elections as a form of political decision making. We will also consider referendums and plebiscites. We will unpack different electoral systems, considering their advantages and disadvantages in terms of democracy and integrity. We will assess the impact on electoral democracy of technological and social change. We will refer to past elections in Australia and elsewhere, and will also keep track of elections taking place during October and November such as the US midterms, national elections in New Zealand and Israel, and regional elections in Quebec and Victoria.
