ACT School Volunteer Program 2021 - Meccano® mentors wanted!

1 April 2021

The School Volunteer Program of the ACT is recruiting volunteers to work in schools in 2021. It connects mature age adults as volunteers to work with young people in schools.

If you have some spare time & are wanting to find a way to give back to your local community, this could suit you.

You only need to have one hour per week available DURING SCHOOL TERMS ONLY!

We need many more mentors to assist students to build Meccano® models. Meccano® is a model construction system created in 1898 by Frank Hornby in Liverpool, UK. It consists of reusable metal strips, plates, angle girders, wheels, axles & gears, & plastic parts that are connected using nuts & bolts. It enables the building of working models & mechanical devices.

Each student has a Meccano® kit & a book of instructions. You will need to have patience & be willing to guide the student as they read the instructions, find the relevant pieces & put together the model of their choice. It takes them about a term to complete a model, developing self confidence & patience throughout the process.

Training and induction are provided so that you become part of our volunteer community, helping students who are struggling at school to become confident learners.

We have had requests from Primary Schools in Campbell, Ainslie & Evatt so if you are interested & live near to one of those schools we would like to hear from you.

Interested? Then have a chat to Nola Shoring on 0434 537 555.
