A History of Astrology, an Overview (H269.01)

Vacancies

Just the mention of astrology can evoke strong reaction, but why is this so? Attitudes towards astrology over millennia shift from viewing it as a respected scholarly scientific tradition, historically used for political forecasting and medicine, to a marginalised "pseudoscience" or means of "fortune telling".
Over two sessions we will look at a potted history of western astrology: origins in Mesopotamia as a system for interpreting celestial omens; 12-sign zodiac of the Babylonians, its spread to Egypt & Greece; Middle Ages to Enlightenment; separation of astrology/astronomy; 20th century resurgence in tandem with psychology; 21st century return to tradition.
