The Italian Renaissance—Art, Humanism, Medici and Murder (H264.01)

Waiting List Only

An illustrated account of events in Italy, especially Florence, in the Renaissance, when Classical texts were revived as a guide to learning, art and civic humanism. Our story begins with Petrarch (1304 ̶ 1374), who was crowned as poet laureate, the first for 1,000 years, as a sign of the rebirth (renaissance) of Classical culture. The spectacular wealth of Florence and other cities funded a great flowering of the arts, brought to a halt by events including French invasions of Italy, but leaving a great legacy.
The talk aims to be an entertaining celebration of an exciting period of history.
