Sicily—Island Contested by Greeks, Romans, Normans and Many Others (H263.01)
Vacancies
An illustrated account of highlights in the history of this strategically located Mediterranean island, which has changed rulers many times over the centuries, resulting in a rich and varied heritage in architecture, language and way of life. The talk concentrates on spectacular visible monuments of the Greeks, Romans, Normans, Germans, Spaniards and English. As I discovered, the ancient Greek theatre in Syracuse is still being put to good use.
I arrived by water, in the wake of Odysseus. I saw many great sights, more or less circumnavigating the island (but on land).
