GOING ON SAFARI – PRE WORLD WAR 11 CAPE TO CAIRO JOURNEYS (H261.01)

Waiting List Only

In the early 1900s Cape to Cairo journeys became all the rage, so much so that one traveller referred to the route as being 'Africa High Street'. What was the attraction and was it all dodging charging elephants, spear throwing natives and hacking through jungles?
This course will describe why such travel became so popular, who those travellers were and how they travelled (by foot, train, steamboat, car and bicycle), when, and which routes they took and what they experienced along the 7000 miles and eleven countries traversed. Lots of examples and pictures from the travellers' tales will be shared.
This course may be repeated in 2026 for the Northside U3A community if there is sufficient demand.
