This lecture-based course will examine the history of slavery in North America from its 17th century beginnings to its demise in 1865. Among other things, we will consider: how and why slavery became established; how it expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries; the complex and changing nature of slavery as a labour system and a system of race control; the world the slaves made — the slaves' experience and how they responded; the world the slaveholders made — white society and politics in the slave South; how slavery ended during the American Civil War; and its historical legacy.
