SOUTHERN SOJOURN
Tuesday 15 to Saturday 19 May
This five day tour will take you to more attractions than you could possibly imagine – East Gippsland, the lovely Strezlecki Ranges, parts of the Bass Strait coastline, the famous garden of 'Heronswood' at Dromana, the SeaRoad ferry across the mouth of Port Phillip, guided tours of historic Fort Queenscliff, 'The Heights' at Geelong and opulent 'Werribee Park', and, if I can secure tickets, A-Reserve seats to Opera Australia's Melbourne showing of The Barber of Seville and to a great Friday night concert by the MSO in the Melbourne Town Hall.
Transport to Bairnsdale on Tuesday will be by V-Line's comfortable coach service departing Canberra Railway Station at 10.50 am. The return to Canberra on Saturday will be by train to Albury and then coach to Jolimont, arriving around 4.20 pm.
From Bairnsdale to Melbourne, on Wednesday and Thursday, we will be chartering our own coach. Our four-star hotel in Melbourne will be located directly opposite Southern Cross Station to facilitate the Saturday train connection and also to facilitate use of trams and trains to get to the opera and concert and to explore Melbourne on Friday.
These Friday inclusions - possibly the Melbourne Museum, the Johnston Collection and a visit to either 'Como' or 'Ripponlea' - will be determined once the preferences of applicants are known. Bookings or enquiries need to be made through the tour leader, Garth Setchell (6290 1100).
In order to secure opera, concert and coach/train tickets, and to confirm the tour price, the size of the group needs to be established by 31 January at the latest. Based on at least 20 bookings, a tour price of $1450pp single or $1175pp dbl/twin is indicated. This would include all transport, entries and accommodation, all meals except three lunches, plus the opera and concert (approx $160 and $90pp rebate if you wish to opt out).
Payment of a $250pp deposit will be required as soon as the price and content have been confirmed, with the balance by 17 March.

15 September ‐ 14 October 2012

.
Beginning in Rome the tour will take in the famous sites of the capital city including the Coliseum, Roman Forum, Vatican City and St Peters Basilica. While based in Rome we will take a step back into the ancient past by visiting the mysterious Etruscan sites, the precursors to Roman civilization. We will later journey further back into the past by visiting the famous rock engravings at Valcamonica which date from the Neolithic Age (6,000 years ago) to the Medieval and Roman periods. We will also make a special visit to see Ötzi the 5,300 year old 'Iceman 'who was found preserved in an alpine glacier. Along the way we will enjoy the more recent history, culture and delights of Venice, Umbria, Pisa, Florence, Alberobello and Sorrento.
